Met Gala: Natasha Poonawalla and Sabyasachi Makes History with Schiaparelli

Met Gala is one of the most important nights for fashion which happens once a year. The Gala is held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, every year we see big faces and labels in regal themes.

This year the theme was “Gilded Theme” the terms refers to ‘Wealth and Privilege’ which Met Gala attempted this time “Gilded Age New York” wherein there was “unprecedented prosperity, cultural change, and industrialization”, a Vogue report stated.

We got Natasha Poonawalla this year at the Met Gala who represented India. Poonawalla is an Indian businesswoman, chairperson of the Villoo Poonawalla Foundation and the Executive Director of the Serum Institute of India. 

Sabyasachi Mukherjee, the biggest fashion of India designed her Saree and jewelleries while the Metallic Bustier was from the house of Schiaparelli.

She stunned everyone in a bespoke Sabyasachi Saree at the Gala 2022 and on top of that she added a bustier from Schiaparelli. 

The Sabyasachi blend of Indian textiles with Schiaparelli’s surreal heritage is something you can only dream about, they made the Gala historic by fusing their elements and an Indian Luxury brand Sabyasachi flavoured with Schiaparelli is mind blowing. 

The bespoke gold handcrafted printed tulle Sabyasachi sari connected sharply against the architectural lines of her armour-esque gold metallic Schiaparelli couture bustier—a signature of Creative Director Daniel Roseberry’s reimagined vision for the Italian Maison—that gives the look an almost kinetic energy.

According to Sabyasachi, Poonawalla wanted to represent the “Glided Glamour” theme with “an Indian gaze that revels in its multi-culturalism and authenticity”

Poonawalla wore a hand-crafted gold printed tulle saree, trail embroidered with silk floss thread, embellished with bevel beads, semi-precious stones, crystals, sequins and appliqued printed velvet.

The jewelleries were exclusive custom pieces from Sabyasachi Fine Jewellery and from their Curiosity Art & Antiquity Project — crafted using traditional techniques with precious and semi-precious stones, the label further added.

“For me the sari is a truly unique and versatile garment that owns its identity even as it transcends boundaries and geographies. Back when I was a young fashion student, I often wondered when I would see the sari at big global events like the Met Gala,” said the designer in an Instagram post.

“I feel blessed to be present and happy to have survived the struggles that came with being part of the effort to fight the pandemic and happy to be able to dedicate time to artistic pursuits, which enable us to communicate across borders through expression.” says Poonawalla.

The outfit turned many heads and Natasha’s vision came true making her outfit one of the best outfit in the evening.

“Fashion to me is wearable art. Art in this sense is communication—it allows people from different cultures and times to communicate with each other via images, sounds and stories.” She added.

After having a strong presence in Met Gala 2022, we are really excited to see what’s next for Sabyasachi label, because they have proved that it’s not just a bridal label it an Indian Luxury label, last year we saw the H&M collab and this year at Met Gala 2022. We can clearly see that there are many things that we can expect from Sabyasachi Label in the coming future.
